When does edge computing genuinely matter versus just adding

When latency requirements are tight enough that round-tripping to a centralized cloud would compromise the operation (real-time equipment control, for instance), or when bandwidth or connectivity constraints make centralized processing impractical — otherwise, centralized cloud processing is usually simpler and sufficient.

Isn't edge computing primarily a manufacturing or IoT concern?

It's most common there, but any operation with genuine real-time decision requirements at a distributed location — retail point-of-sale, autonomous systems, remote facilities — can face the same latency and connectivity constraints that make edge processing valuable.
