GitHub traces its origin to a chance meeting outside a Ruby on Rails meetup in San Francisco, where Tom Preston-Werner showed Chris Wanstrath a project he had been building: a web interface for sharing and editing code stored with Git, the version control system Linus Torvalds created for Linux development. The two, later joined by P.J. Hyett and Scott Chacon, began meeting on weekends to sketch out the product, and the platform launched publicly in April 2008.1 Within its first six months, the site had recorded more than 10,000 open-source projects, an early signal that developers wanted a simpler, social way to collaborate on code than mailing patches back and forth. Preston-Werner had just turned down a signing bonus from Microsoft, where his previous employer had been acquired, choosing instead to bet on GitHub's early momentum.

Free for public code, priced for private

GitHub's founders settled on a pricing structure early that still holds today: anyone can host a public code repository at no cost, while private repositories require a paid plan. That decision served two purposes at once. It let GitHub build a massive base of public, searchable code that made the platform useful and visible from day one, while reserving paid tiers for companies and individuals who needed to keep proprietary code confidential. Microsoft's $7.5 billion bet

Microsoft announced its acquisition of GitHub in June 2018, paying $7.5 billion entirely in Microsoft stock, and closed the deal that October after clearing European Union regulatory review.2 The price reflected how central GitHub had become to software development broadly, not just to Microsoft's own engineering teams, which already used the platform heavily. Nat Friedman, a Microsoft vice president, took over as GitHub's chief executive at the time of the acquisition, replacing co-founder Chris Wanstrath, who moved into a strategic advisory role. Microsoft pledged to keep GitHub operating independently, preserving its existing branding, workflows and support for competing cloud platforms rather than folding it directly into Microsoft's own developer tools.

Independence, mostly, under a new owner

The acquisition closed formally in October 2018, and Microsoft largely kept its promise to run GitHub as a distinct product with its own engineering culture.3 That arrangement let GitHub continue supporting integrations with rival cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud, a decision that mattered to developers wary of a fully Microsoft-controlled platform. Over the following years, GitHub absorbed Microsoft-built tools including npm, the JavaScript package registry, while continuing to operate its core hosting business largely unchanged. The relationship shifted meaningfully only with the rise of generative AI, when GitHub became the natural home for Microsoft's push into AI-assisted coding.

Free code, paid privacy: the revenue mechanics

GitHub earns revenue almost entirely through subscriptions rather than advertising or data sales. Individuals and small teams pay for private repository access and collaboration features under GitHub's Team plan, while large organizations pay considerably more for GitHub Enterprise, which adds security controls, audit logging and dedicated support. GitHub Enterprise has historically generated more than half of the company's subscription income, reflecting how much large corporate customers value administrative control over their code compared with individual developers. Beyond subscriptions, GitHub takes a commission on sales made through its Marketplace, where third-party developers sell tools and integrations that plug into the platform, and sells branded merchandise through its online shop, though these remain minor revenue lines next to subscriptions.

Copilot turns GitHub into an AI product company

GitHub Copilot, the company's AI coding assistant, has reshaped its business since its 2021 launch. The platform surpassed 20 million all-time users by mid-2025, and nearly 80% of developers who joined GitHub that year adopted Copilot within their first week of signing up.4 That adoption rate signals a shift in how new developers experience the platform: AI-assisted coding is now close to a default expectation rather than an optional add-on. Copilot pricing runs on tiered monthly subscriptions, from a limited free plan through Pro, Pro+ and Business tiers priced per user, giving GitHub a second major subscription product layered on top of its original repository hosting business.

That mission statement, still displayed on GitHub's own site, has taken on new meaning as Copilot shifts the platform from a place developers store code toward a place developers write it with AI assistance, and Microsoft has increasingly treated GitHub as core infrastructure for its broader artificial intelligence strategy rather than a standalone acquisition running on the side.

A changing of the guard

Thomas Dohmke, who became GitHub's chief executive in November 2021, announced in 2025 that he would step down by the end of the year to start a new venture, describing his decision as wanting to "become a founder again."5 Rather than naming a direct successor, Microsoft folded GitHub's leadership into its CoreAI engineering division, led by former Meta engineering executive Jay Parikh, while Julia Liuson, head of Microsoft's Developer Division, took oversight of GitHub's revenue, engineering and support functions. The reorganization came as GitHub reported its platform had grown to more than 150 million developers and roughly 420 million repositories. The move signals that Microsoft now sees GitHub less as an independent subsidiary and more as a central piece of its AI product strategy, even as the underlying freemium hosting business continues largely unchanged.
