A blockchain is a distributed, tamper-resistant ledger maintained by a network of computers rather than a single company or institution. Each transaction gets grouped into a block, verified across the network, and permanently linked to the blocks before it, making the historical record extremely difficult to alter after the fact. For a company, building a business model around blockchain means designing the product so that this shared, verifiable ledger does something a traditional centralized database could not do as credibly, such as proving who owns a specific digital item.

OpenSea, launched in 2017, built its entire marketplace around this property. Every NFT listed and sold on OpenSea has its ownership recorded on a public blockchain, most commonly Ethereum, which means buyers do not have to trust OpenSea's word that a seller actually owns what they claim to be selling.1 The blockchain record settles that question independently of the marketplace itself, which is the core trust mechanism that makes an NFT marketplace viable in the first place.

Decentralization, Immutability and Transparency

Three properties define most blockchain business models. Decentralization means no single company or government controls the ledger, since it is replicated and updated across a distributed network of computers. Immutability means that once a transaction is confirmed and added to the chain, altering it would require rewriting an enormous number of subsequent, cross-verified blocks, which is computationally impractical. Transparency means that although a person's real identity stays hidden behind a cryptographic address, every transaction tied to that address remains publicly visible and traceable.

For OpenSea, transparency is what makes the marketplace function at all. Anyone can independently verify on the Ethereum blockchain that a given NFT was minted by a specific wallet and later transferred through a specific chain of owners, without needing OpenSea to vouch for that history. That verifiability is also why OpenSea does not itself custody the NFTs it lists: ownership lives on the blockchain, and OpenSea's marketplace is a layer for discovery, listing and executing trades on top of it.

OpenSea and the 2021 NFT Boom

OpenSea's trading volume rose dramatically through 2021, as speculative interest in NFTs, from profile-picture collections to digital art, drew both casual buyers and serious collectors into the market. The company's standard business model during this period was straightforward: charge a percentage fee, historically 2.5 percent, on every completed sale that passed through its marketplace. Because so much trading volume moved through OpenSea specifically, that fee alone generated substantial revenue and pushed OpenSea's private valuation into billions of dollars at the peak of investor interest.2

A blockchain marketplace still earns money the way any marketplace does: by taking a cut of transactions that would not happen without it.

That growth also exposed the model's core vulnerability. OpenSea's revenue was tied almost entirely to trading volume rather than to a subscription base or any other recurring source, which meant the company's income would rise and fall in direct proportion to how much speculative enthusiasm existed for NFTs at any given moment.

The Decline and OpenSea's Response

NFT trading volume across the market fell steeply from 2022 onward, and OpenSea's own volume dropped even more sharply as competitors such as Blur captured a growing share of Ethereum NFT trading.3 Facing that pressure, OpenSea cut its transaction fee to zero for a period in early 2023, trading revenue for the chance to retain trading volume against rivals offering lower or no fees.4 OpenSea also drew industry criticism for ending mandatory creator royalty payments on resales, a change that strained its relationship with digital artists who had relied on that income from secondary sales.

To rebuild technical infrastructure underneath the marketplace, OpenSea introduced the Seaport protocol, an open-source exchange contract designed to make trades cheaper and more efficient to execute on-chain.5 The company later launched OpenSea Pro, a more advanced trading tool aimed at active traders who wanted aggregated pricing and tools across multiple NFT marketplaces rather than OpenSea alone. Fee structures have continued to shift since, including a later increase tied to new platform incentive programs, reflecting a company still searching for a sustainable model at lower overall trading volumes.

Beyond marketplace fees, several other structures show up across blockchain companies. Blockchain-as-a-service providers, including major cloud vendors, let client businesses run blockchain applications without managing the underlying infrastructure themselves, charging for hosting, support and related services rather than for blockchain transactions directly.6 Utility token models issue tokens that grant holders specific rights, access or functionality inside a particular ecosystem, generating revenue as those tokens are bought, used or held. Network fee models, where a blockchain charges a small fee for computational activity on the network itself, fund the infrastructure through direct usage rather than through a marketplace layered on top.

Auditing is a narrower but consequential model, since smart contracts that move significant money need independent security review, and companies specializing in that review can charge substantial fees given the cost of an exploited vulnerability. Each of these approaches solves for a different part of the blockchain ecosystem, and a single company sometimes combines more than one, as OpenSea has by pairing marketplace fees with a proprietary protocol it also makes available more broadly.

Risks Tied to a Blockchain-Native Model

Building a business on blockchain infrastructure introduces risks that a conventional marketplace does not face in the same form. Regulatory uncertainty around cryptocurrency and digital assets has grown in most major markets, and rules governing NFT sales, royalties and token issuance can change with little notice, forcing companies such as OpenSea to adjust their products reactively. Price volatility in the underlying cryptocurrencies used to pay for transactions, primarily Ethereum, also affects user willingness to trade, since a sharp swing in crypto prices can suppress activity independent of anything happening on the marketplace itself. Competitive pressure compounds these risks, since a blockchain marketplace's core technology, unlike a proprietary retail platform, is often easy for a well-funded competitor to replicate once the underlying protocols are public.

Key Partners

OpenSea's key partners include the Ethereum network and other blockchains it supports, since the marketplace depends entirely on external blockchain infrastructure it does not control. Wallet providers such as MetaMask are essential partners, since users need a compatible crypto wallet to connect to OpenSea and complete any transaction. Summary

Blockchain business models succeed or fail based on whether the underlying technology solves a problem participants actually have, not on how novel the cryptography sounds. OpenSea proved this twice: first by building genuine value as the place where NFT buyers and sellers could trust a transaction without a central authority, then by nearly disappearing as trading volume collapsed once speculative demand for NFTs faded.
